Sympathetic resonance is a harmonic phenomenon in which a formerly passive string or vibratory body responds to external vibrations to which it has a harmonic similarity. The classic example is demonstrated with two similar tuning-forks. When one of the tuning forks is truck, the other begins vibrating automatically via resonance. Certain types of oscillators can alter the environment through sympathetic resonance as well. This means that with the right kind of environmental stimulus, you can entrain standing waves not only in the brain but in the body as well. The most pervasive of all the popular fictions surrounding the Schumann resonance is that it is correlated with the health of the human body. There are a huge number of products and services sold to enhance health or mood, citing the Schumann resonance as the foundational science. Before looking at some of these claims in detail, it’s noteworthy that neither Schumann resonances, electromagnetic radiation, or the Earth’s ionosphere are mentioned in any medical or anatomical textbooks. There is no detectable or theoretically predicted relationship between either ELF radio or the number 7.83 and the health of human body. But let’s look at some of the claims. Schumann resonance (SR), which consists of naturally occurring, extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic waves that inhabit the space above the Earth and below the ionosphere. It sounds trippy, but this is a real thing. Discovered–or more accurately, mathematically predicted–by Winfried Otto Schumann in 1952, SR is sustained by the energy created by the 2000 or so thunderstorms that produce about 50 flashes of lightning around the planet every second. The SR ELF electromagnetic waves encircle the globe, hug-like, with the lowest-frequency mode occurring around 7.83Hz. Higher resonance modes peak every 6.5Hz or so (14.3, 20.8, 27.3 and 33.8, etc, up to about 60Hz), but we are focus on that predominant wave of 7.83Hz. Potential Impact On Human Health
Obviously, our survival is dependent on the Earth’s atmosphere for oxygen and its terrestrial bounty of food and water. But ever more evidence is suggesting that we also require a steady diet of geomagnetic resonances to maintain optimal health, and the Schumann resonance in particular. Upon discovering that the fundamental Schumann frequency of 7.83Hz is very close to that of human alpha wave rhythms, Schumann’s doctoral student Herbert Konig was one of the first modern researchers to associate SR with human bioactivity. Centuries before Konig, though, ancient Indian Rishis also knew about it, enhancing it with the isochronic tonal frequencies of the sound ‘OM’. In fact, plenty of anthropological evidence suggests humans of all cultures have, over the millennia, attempted to achieve trance states by synchronizing with planetary resonances, before even knowing precisely what those were. This was done through various rituals like shamanic drumming and dancing, or religious behaviours such as bobbing and swaying during prayer. Isochronic tones are regular beats of a single tone used for brainwave training. They differ from monaural beats, which are constant sine wave pulses rather than entirely separate pulses of a single tone. As the contrast between noise and silence is more pronounced than the constant pulses of monaural beats, the stimulus is stronger and has a greater effect on brain entrainment. No wonder this frequency has been associated with high levels of hypnotizability and meditation, increased HGH levels, and enhanced cerebral blood flow levels. The Schumann Resonance From Wikipedia: “The Schumann resonances (SR) are a set of spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency (ELF) portion of the Earth’s electromagnetic field spectrum. Schumann resonances are global electromagnetic resonances, excited by lightning discharges in the cavity formed by the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere.” Our planet has a rhythm that has played a major role in governing the evolution of life. We don’t just live on the Earth. We live inside it; namely, in the unique cavity that is formed between the Earth’s surface and ionosphere. And within that cavity, you and I swim in a veritable sea of invisible energies and opscillating fields. The smallest changes in one intertwined area carry over turbulence into others. Every second, a multitude of pulses travel around the world in this unique, resonant chamber between the Earth and the ionosphere, sending colluding signals to all microorganisms. These signals couple us to the Earth’s magnetic field. Named after their discoverer, these Schumann Resonances (SR) drive the harmonizing pulse for life in our world. We all march to the cadence of this terrestrial drummer — our planetary heartbeat, which sets the tempo for health and well-being. Damaging this planetary heartbeat could be detrimental to all life on this planet. In the name of progress, this Earth Pulse is now threatened with the ever-growing phenomenon of man-made electro-pollution in an advancing technological age. Brainwave Evolution:
Lewis B. Hainsworth was among the first to suggest that human health is linked to a geophysical framework by way of the naturally occurring Schumann ELF (extremely low frequencies). His theory identified naturally occurring features which determine the frequency spectrum of human brain-wave rhythms. He concluded that the frequencies of human brain-waves evolved in response to these signals. If his theory is correct, conditions for evolutionary changes in human brainwave patterns have now been established. Hainsworth theorized that “[t]he frequencies of naturally occurring electro-magnetic signals, circulating in the electrically resonant cavity bounded by the earth and the ionosphere, have governed or determined the ‘evolution’ or development of the frequencies of operation of the principal human brain-wave signals: In particular, the alpha-rhythm is so placed that it can in no circumstances suffer an extensive interference from naturally occurring signals.” Commenting on the unique correlations of Alpha brainwave activity and its relationship to the Earth-ionispheric cavity resonance, Hainsworth has said, “As human beings we have extraordinary potentials we have hardly begun to study, much less understand. Creative gifts, intuitions and talents that are unpredictable or emergent may become stabilized in generations to come. Hopefully, we can learn to understand both our emergence from an essentially electromagnetic environment and facilitate our potential for healing, growth and non-local communication.” In a state of deep relaxation, slow rhythmic sine wave patterns in the 6-8 Hz range can be detected. Continually reinforced wave forms, created by resonance, can result in large oscillations which entrain other circuits in the body tuned to those frequencies. As the Earth naturally pulses at various frequencies, this acts as a kind of master entrainment signal that entrains a whole hierarchy of frequencies, including those of the human heart, brain and mind. As wondrous as this may seem, it makes perfect sense when you realize that everything we do is done within this sea of entraining energy pulses produced by the Schumann Resonances. The ionosphere that comprises the ceiling of this Schumann cavity is made up of electrically charged particles. This highly charged layer makes the ionosphere act as a kind of “capacitor” for the Earth. And there is a difference in electrical potential between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere, which acts as a kind of electrical generator. You might think of this electromagnetic field around the earth as a kind of gel, like stiff jelly. When we move, all those movements are transmitted to the environment via this field, and vice versa. These fields not only affect our bodies, they also influence our body’s electrical charge. As we stand on the ground, our body is grounded. Our body creates a kind of basin within the electrostatic field by distorting its lines of force. In 1981, Dr. Richard Alan Miller published a scientific paper in which he showed that this process couples us as human beings with the isoelectric field of the planet. The scientist after whom the Schumann Resonance is named, Winifried Otto Schumann, calculated the Earth-ionosphere cavity resonance frequencies in 1957. He found the most predominant standing wave to be around 7.83 Hz. In a “tuned” system of oscillators, when one oscillator begins vibrating, the other oscillator will eventually begin vibrating at the same frequency. This process is referred to as “entrainment” or “kindling.” Kindling is also a term that refers to neuronal entrainment in the brain. As this kindling ignites more neurons globally across the surface of the brain, it helps facilitate a synchronous, coherent state of consciousness such as that seen in deep meditation. Interestingly, the 7.83 Hz Schumann Resonance falls within the range of human brain waves, precisely in the middle where the alpha brainwave and theta brain wave ranges meet. As such, practices that elicit this range of brain waves, such as meditation, help facilitate a deep coupling of human physiology with the Earth’s Schumann Resonance. Various scientific experiments have suggested that this mutual coupling of human physiology with the Earth creates a kind of resonance in which energy and information are most efficiently transferred between the two. This may be how the planet communicates with us as humans via the universal language of resonance. And this is likely one of the reasons why being out in nature can be so enlivening and healing for human beings. In his scientific paper entitled, “Schumann’s Resonances and Human Psychobiology,” Dr. Richard Allen Miller states, “Ample anthropological evidence shows that humans have intuitively synchronized with the planetary resonance throughout human history and back into the mists of time. There is cross-cultural evidence demonstrating a variety of ritualistic practices which enhance this harmonization with the planetary field. Perhaps the most obvious ‘drivers’ of these trance states are shamanic drumming and trance dance, arguably employed for over 50,000 years. Pulsing light is another driver. A further example comes from the use in both the Jewish and Muslim faiths of bobbing and swaying while praying or reading holy books. “This trancing phenomenon can be presumed to ingrain texts at a deeper level and to create ‘experiences’ to go along with conceptual indoctrination. It may also be linked in some manner to hypnotic gesturing (mudras) and speech, and therefore to charisma or so-called “mana” personalities. Mead and Bateson reported a technique transmitted to Balinese children which this culture intuitively employed to harmonize their communities. They discovered that the parents encouraged their children to vibrate parts of their body, harmonizing to the SR cycle. And you can do the same thing; you may already do it unconsciously. “If you sit in a chair and move your foot so that it’s resting on the ball of the foot, and you get it at the right angle, your whole leg will start to vibrate. It goes into an oscillation. That oscillation is so close to the SR cycle as to be virtually the same. And that’s what Balinese parents encouraged their children to do. It helps them go into trance.” Can anybody intentionally induce this healing/energizing frequency? Absolutely. There are numerous ways to entrain the human brain, heart or even the entire human organism to the Schumann Resonance. By consciously linking ourselves to the Schumann Resonance, we are essentially taking strategic advantage of the natural harmonic relationship between the Earth and ourselves. We are intimately interwoven with the Earth’s low frequency isoelectric, magnetic and electrostatic fields, but modern day electro-pollution can often interfere with this natural connection. Numerous scientific studies have shown a positive correlation between various Psi phenomena and the 7 – 8 Hz range of human brain waves, which also just so happen to correlate with the fundamental Schumann Resonance at 7.83 Hz. Michael Persinger, Ph.D. of Laurentian University in Canada has conducted a number of scientific experiments that have led him to theorize that the 7 – 8 Hz range of brainwave frequencies acts as a kind of entraining frequency to link the human mind and brain with the Earth’s geomagnetic field. Chakras are the concentrated energy centers of the body. Chakra is a Sanskrit term and it means “wheel” or “disk” and is derived from the root word “cakra”. Chakras are spinning wheels of energy/light. Chakras have the loving responsibility of taking in, incorporating and emanating energy to keep us functioning at optimal levels. We have major and minor chakras in our energetic body systems. When a chakra is not functioning properly or if it is blocked, illness is more prone to occur. Our wellbeing on all levels can affect and is affected by the chakras. If we are feeling depressed, then we may not be taking in the maximum amount of energy for our needs. If we do not nourish our bodies with the proper food and nutrients, then we may take in less energy than more. If we “block” feelings such as anger, etc., or do not speak our truth, we may be unconsciously impeding our healthy energy flow. On the other hand, if we endeavor to work on our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, we can promote with ease the flow of energy through our chakras. Yoga is one way, for example, that we can work to strengthen and enhance the flow of our chakra systems. Clearing out clutter in our lives, physically and emotionally, helps to strengthen the flow of our energy. Forgiveness greatly enhances our energetic health. Of course, Reiki helps to strengthen the body’s energetic flow to bring back balance and promotes wellbeing on all levels. Below is a list of the major chakras and their basic properties.
Root (1st) — Base of the spine; red; governs survival instincts, grounding.
Sacral (2nd) — Lower abdomen; orange; governs sexuality, intuition, self-worth/-esteem. Solar Plexus (3rd) — Upper abdomen; yellow; governs impulse control, ego.
Heart (4th) — Center of the chest; green; governs compassion, spirituality.
Throat (5th) — Throat; blue; governs communication, emotion. Third Eye (6th) — Between the eyes; purple; governs rationality, wisdom, imagination.
Crown (7th) — Top of the head; indigo; governs connection with the Divine. Base or Root Chakra – Muladhara.
Bija mantra (seed sound) is lam. It is related to survival, security, and is the closest to the earth, resting at the base of the spine. The color associated with it is red. It is naturally associated with the element earth. To keep this chakra healthy, exercises such as dancing, jogging or jumping are beneficial. We should see if our security needs are being met, and take our power to create our own security in our lives so that our world is a safe and enjoyable place for us. It’s message is, “I exist”. Live your life proudly. Sacral Chakra – Svadhistana.
Bija Mantra is vam. This chakra is related to sensuality, sexuality, and desire for pleasure. It is in the lower abdomen and it’s color is orange. Svadhistana is associated with the element water. Bellydancing, loving partnerships, and yoga can enhance the function of this chakra. This chakra says, “I desire”. Live your passion, whatever that may be. What are your dreams? How do you desire to live? Claim your dreams and go out and make them a reality – give birth to you dreams. Solar Plexus Chakra – Manipura.
Bija mantra is ram. It’s color is yellow, and it is related to our power in this world. It’s natural element is fire, and this is where the “fire in your belly” term derives from. An overbearing solar plexus chakra (one not in balance with the other chakras in your system or one where your energy is solely focused) can result in obsessive-compulsive control. A third chakra, or solar plexus chakra, with a healthy flow allows you to control your destiny, feel your power and accomplish your dreams. The message of the third chakra is “I control”. Go forth and control your own destiny and happiness – you deserve it! Heart Chakra – Anahata.
Bija mantra is yam. Green is the color of this chakra and it relates naturally to love and compassion, being at our heart center. This fourth chakra is associated with air. Healthy relationships, pets, family, even appreciation of beauty and nature enhance the health of this chakra. Anahata says, “I love”. Let your heart energy flow freely in and out. Be open to receiving the love that is available to you now, the free-flowing love that is your birthright. Sense your Reiki family around the world – feel the great love that you all share and that you selflessly emanate into this world. Shine the love that you are. Throat Chakra – Vishuddha.
Bija mantra is ham. The throat center or communication center is where you speak your truth in this world. It’s color is blue. When this chakra is flowing at optimum levels, you have the ability to ask for what you need. You also reflect your truth in the world through this chakra though your communication. Singing, chanting and breathing exercises can enhance the health of this chakra. The message of the throat chakra is “I express”. Do not suppress your own beautiful voice. Speak your truth, sing your joy, emanate your love through the vibration of your words. Third Eye Chakra – Ajna.
Some associated Bija mantras are Sham or Aum or Om. The natural color of this chakra is indigo. Insight, intuition, awareness and guidance are the properties of this sixth chakra. This chakra, located between the eyebrows, says, “I am the witness”. Meditation and visualization exercises can assist the healthy flow of this chakra. Be open to your inner guidance. Listen to your thoughts, they will assist you on the right path. Crown Chakra – Sahasrara.
Some associated Bija mantras are Om or Ah or Soham. It is the silence between the space and represents spiritual connection. It is associated with violet or violet-white light, a color many Reiki practitioners are drawn to and use in their work and meditations. Located a little above the top of the head, it represents union, bliss, the knowledge of being at one with all. Cosmic consciousness and peace are the frequency at this chakra. “I am that I am”. Chakra Balancing
Anytime a chakra becomes blocked, underactive or overactive, it can throw you off balance physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. For instance, if you have ever experienced persistent trouble expressing yourself, felt like you’re walking around in an emotional “fog,” or suffered through several bouts of laryngitis or sore throats these are all signs you may have an imbalanced throat chakra. Generally speaking, when chakras are “off,” the body is excellent about communicating what ones are affected. When you consider all the signs you are experiencing, be they physical or not, odds are they’re centered around the area of the affected chakra. Chakra Cleansing
To restore balance to the chakras, cleansing is needed.
In order to restore positive balance to the affected energy center, the entire blockage and/or negativity must be removed. The most common method to balance chakras is energy healing, which can include:
Reiki, Conscious breathing, Tai Chi, Chakra meditation, Acupressure and acupuncture, Yoga, Aromatherapy. Another common form of energy healing is the use of healing stones. Chakra healing stones are each colored to correspond to individual chakras. Cleansed and charged prior to use, the seven stones are laid upon the body’s energy centers. Each stone possesses a vibrational frequency that matches that of chakra over which it is placed. As the chakra absorbs the stone’s frequency, its balance is restored. It may be beneficial to meditate on the chakras for increased health of your energetic system and even intuit themes from them. Some simple ideas are: breathing energy into your chakras, starting at the base, seeing the colors vividly and visualizing your beautiful energy centers spinning in a healthy way, filling your body with health, wisdom, and light. Another idea is to meditate, starting at your base chakra, and ask them if they have a message for you. The answers you receive may be quite insightful! Also, continue to give Reiki to yourself – this is one of the best ways to assist your body’s energy system to function in a healthy way and to work toward wellness on all levels.
