So when marijuana becomes legal can Christians enjoy the occasional puff? It’s a brave new world out there. Now that marijuana is becoming legal the old pastoral or parental answer of just don’t do it because it’s against the law doesn’t cut it. Are there any biblical principles that can help us navigate this new moral conundrum for followers of Jesus? Well here are a few things that may be transferrable first of all, scripture teaches like in 1 Corinthians 6 that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We should try and take care of our bodies and anything we smoke, anything we take into our lungs other than clean air will always have a negative affect on us. Now I know two things are true that I’m aware of. Number 1, I’m a hypocrite, I get it. Fat guy who always goes for the second piece of pie talking about how to take care of your body but just because I have my own struggles doesn’t mean I shouldn’t give you wise counsel and smoking will always damage you in some way, shape, or form but the other thing I’m aware of is you don’t always need to inhale smoke in order to get marijuana into your system so we’ll move onto point number two which is avoid drunkenness. This Biblical principle is something that could help us navigate the issue of getting high with marijuana. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians chapter 5 be very careful then how you live not as unwise but as wise making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil, He’s saying that there’s a lot of bad stuff going on out there and we should be looking for every opportunity we can to be salt and light to share the love of Jesus and the truth of Jesus with others. He goes on to say, therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery instead be filled with the spirit. The spirit should be enough for us. The spirit should be our high and drunkenness here is said to be something that can lead to debauchery which is a word that means loss of self control. So, he’s not saying you can never drink alcohol. He’s saying, you know there’s a point in drinking alcohol where you will get drunk and that drunkenness can lead to loss of self control when the fruit of the spirit includes self control. The spirit wants us to be in a state where we are prepared to love others and ourselves as best as possible alcohol can get to a point where it’s working against that. Is the same true of marijuana? Maybe so, and if that’s the case we need to know where the limit is. One last point then. It’s not only a matter of making healthy choices for your body and avoiding drunkenness but not just avoiding drunkenness, the Apostle Peter encourages us always to aim for complete clear headedness and sobriety. The way he puts it is be sober-minded be alert. He says this a few times in his first epistle. I’ll look at one example. 1 Peter 5. Verse 8 says, be alert and of sober mind your enemy the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him standing firm in the faith because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. You’re part of a family, you’re not just an island you’re making decisions with others in mind and Satan wants to destroy he wants to dismantle he wants to discourage Christians and and our way of fighting him is to push back by being always alert and always sober-minded, clear headed. When we go into social situations as a follower of Jesus we don’t just go into them to say “how can I have a good time and this situation serve me?” We go into every situation saying “how can I love others here well?” Keep these things in mind and there will be wisdom as your guiding principle in your relationship with marijuana. Having said this it does raise the question just because something is legal does that make it moral? I think you know the answer to that but that’s another question.
