that is, to chapter 12. This vision was also an answer to the prayers of Daniel, who, although he was already about 90 years old, spent three weeks in fasting and prayer. -“And why?” Because he was afflicted. -“Was he still saddened by the captivity?” No. In fact, Daniel waited 70 years for the fulfillment of God’s promise
that the captivity would end at that time; and in 536 B.C., just 70 years after
Nebuchadnezzar’s first invasion of Jerusalem, God fulfilled His promise. Some 50,000 happy Jews left Babylon
to return to their homeland, thanks to a decree issued
by the king of Persia, Cyrus the Great. “All those who are from Judah and want to rebuild the temple,
have my permission to go to Jerusalem” -“That’s good news.” -“Then why was he sad?” Because the joy didn’t last long. When the Israelites began to build the temple,
they faced strong opposition. The Samaritans sent false reports to the Persian court, inciting King Cyrus to stop the rebuilding work. So Daniel was distressed, and for three weeks he prayed to God
to influence Cyrus to allow the work to continue. -“Didn’t God answer him?” -“Three weeks fasting is a long time!” God heard him from the first moment, but the battle was not only against
the Samaritans, or against King Cyrus. The battle was against an invisible enemy. That’s why the question this week is: What does Daniel chapter 10
teach us about spiritual battles? First of all, GOD IS PART OF THE SCENE A few chapters ago we talked about the need
to open our eyes to look at the whole picture, because problems and difficulties
sometimes limit our vision, and make us focus only on what concerns us. We provided the example of the image of
a mother screaming loudly at her little child and pulling him violently by the neck. Initially we might think that this is an abusive mother, and we would even flood the social networks
publishing the photo and denouncing this abuse. But when we enlarge the image, when we see the whole picture, we discover that the child was about
to fall from a 20-storey building. The mother’s scream and violent reaction
saved the little boy’s life. And now we understand that instead of being a villain… -“She is a real heroine” -“A super mom”
-“Like my mom” Something similar happened to the prophet Daniel. A limited view of the situation showed
the Jewish people in great trouble and God, who did not respond even though Daniel had already
spent 21 days in fasting and prayer. But suddenly God opens prophet’s eyes
and gives him a vision that allows him to see the whole picture, which makes him understand that,
even though he did not notice it, someone else was part of the scene. The prophet sees a man clothed in linen, with a belt of fine gold, his body like a precious stone, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and feet like shining bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. -“Wooow”
-“And who was that man?” Undoubtedly, it was Christ Jesus. -“And how can we be sure of that?” Well, because of His characteristics, we can say that He is someone invested
with priestly, royal and military attributes. He has similarities with the
“prince of the armies of the Lord” who appeared to Joshua shortly
before the battle of Jericho, who undoubtedly was not an angel, since He asked Joshua to remove
his shoes and accepted the worship, something that an angel would never allow. And centuries later, the apostle John,
being exiled on the island of Patmos, sees exactly the same Heavenly Being,
with similar characteristics. The difference is that John,
who during his youth knew Jesus in person, recognized Him as “one like
the Son of Man” at Revelation 1:13 Furthermore, the Lord Himself
revealed His identity to John: ” I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! Amen.”
(Revelation 1:17-18, NIV) How beautiful it is to be able
to look at the whole picture, and understand that, although sometimes
problems and difficulties dark the picture, Jesus is there, our Savior is part of the scene. Secondly, ANGELS ARE TO HELP US When Daniel beheld the wonderful presence of Christ, he lost his strength, collapsed,
and fell into a deep sleep. But Daniel was strengthened with
the triple touch of an angel. It was Gabriel, the same one who had appeared
to him in the two previous visions. – With the first touch, he made him listen: “O Daniel, man greatly beloved, stand upright,
for I have now been sent to you.” (Daniel 10:11, NKJV) In our spiritual battles, God sends
his angels to protect us and remind us that we are very much loved before God. Aunt Ellen confirms this: “But if the one in danger perseveres, and in helplessness and weakness casts himself upon the merits of the blood of Christ, Jesus listens to the earnest prayer of faith, and sends a reinforcement of those angels which excel in strength to deliver him.”
(Messages to Young People, p. 53.1) Do you notice that? “A reinforcement of angels who excel in strength!” In heaven there are squadrons of special forces waiting for the order of their commander in chief, Christ Jesus, to come to our aid in times of trouble. It is as if a police patrol were insufficient
to confront the enemy, and then they are sent reinforcements, the best, the strongest and the most capable of making even the most powerful
boss of the Neapolitan mafia flee. – The second touch was on his lips,
and it made him speak: “My lord, because of the vision
my sorrows have overwhelmed me, and I have retained no strength.” (Daniel 10:16, NKJV) It is common that in the midst of our struggles
we experience feelings of fear, weakness and pain. Daniel also felt them, but he did not stay with them, he expressed his weakness out loud
to the right person: Jesus Christ. God doesn’t just talk to us;
He wants us to open our mouths so we can express our feelings,
needs, and aspirations to Him. -And with the angel’s third touch,
Daniel was strengthened: “O man greatly beloved, fear not!
Peace be to you; be strong, yes, be strong!” So when he spoke, Daniel was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.” If, in the midst of our trials, we could open
our eyes as they were opened to Elisha, we would see angels sent by God for our help. “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those
who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14, NKJV) “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11, NKJV) And thirdly, THE BATTLE IS NOT
AGAINST BLOOD OR FLESH Sometimes we think our battles are
against flesh and blood people. In fact, when the angel explains
to Daniel the reasons for his delay, he seems to be referring to a human prince: “For from the first day that you set
your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have
come because of your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia
withstood me twenty-one days.” (Daniel 10:12-13, NKJV) Do you think that if that prince of Persia
were a man of flesh and blood he could have resisted
a powerful angel like Gabriel for 21 days? If he were a man of flesh and blood,
Gabriel would have eliminated him in a single pinch. If there was a prince in Persia
who opposed God’s people, it was Cambyses, the son of Cyrus the Great. But the real battle was against that invisible enemy who incited the whole Persian
court to afflict God’s people. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness
in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12, NKJV) But, just as our fight is not against
flesh and blood people, we must understand that we, who are
also flesh and blood, cannot fight alone. Gabriel himself acknowledged
that he needed help from above: “And behold, Michael,
one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia.” (Daniel 10:13, NKJV) -“And who is Michael?” That’s a good question! The “Prince of princes” who suffers
the attack of the little horn in Daniel 8:25, is now presented by His name: Michael, which means ‘Who as God’? Revelation 12:5-11 shows Michael defeating Satan and his angels and casting them out of Heaven. Jude 1:9, shows Michael resurrecting Moses. And it also identifies Him as the archangel. And we don’t say as ONE archangel for the simple reason that there is
only one mentioned in the holy scriptures. The term archangel is only mentioned
once more in the Bible, In 1 Thessalonians 4:16, performing again, with His voice, a resurrection: that of those who died in Christ. And who else can raise the dead? (John 5:25, 28) Jesus Himself is identified as the one
at whose voice all will be raised. (John 5:25, 28) Michael, therefore, is undoubtedly Jesus
Himself, our victorious Prince. This does not mean that Jesus is just another angel. He is God. What it does mean is that God
takes on the role of an archangel, a warrior-prince, to defend His people in person
when the hosts of darkness want to destroy us. “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
