Winter reflections

[Music plays throughout] Winter in the Duluth area is an absolutely magical time. Whenever there’s fresh snow it’s just so so beautiful, and there’s so much to do both on campus and off campus. Haiden: So some of my favorite things to do in the winter, especially in this area, are ice climbing and like just winter camping in general. So I really like ice climbing because I’m also a rock climber and it’s enough to just go outside and scale something vertical is just a lot of fun. And winter camping because it’s completely different than in the summer like it’s still the same idea, we’re going out we’re gonna set up camp somewhere and spend the night. But you have to think about so many more things, like how many sleeping bags I’m gonna bring, what is this gonna look like, what is that gonna look like, and it’s just the complete opposite of summer in a way. So at Outdoor Pursuit we’ve got any gear that you would really need in order to go camping or do any activity in the winter. Elizabeth: Fat tire biking on campus is actually really accessible for students. We have bikes to rent down here that are pretty inexpensive for students, and you can hop right on the trails back here on campus or you can go a couple miles away and hit up some other really cool trails as well. In the winter I love to cross-country ski, there’s so many beautiful trails around here. I also like to snowshoe and just go for hikes with friends and go down by the lake on those calm days as well. Rose: Some of my favorite indoor activities at St. Scholastica are coffee house. We have coffee house nights on every single Wednesday between 6 & 8. They bring in local artists from the Duluth area to play for us, including St. Scholastica’s own students as well. So it creates a coffeehouse vibe in Storm’s Den, one of the cafeterias here on campus. They offer free hot chocolate, free coffee, from The Port thanks to Student Activities and it just creates a really cool atmosphere for students to study in, and also communicate with each other. Another one of my favorite activities is Knitting and Nibbles. I was able to learn how to knit and my grandmother is actually really proud of me for that. They offer snacks to go chitchat with your friends and also learn how to crochet and knit. Elizabeth: Cosmic climbing here on campus is one of my favorite events in the winter. It’s a really cool way to bring a lot of people together. We tape up the whole entire wall with some type of theme, this year’s theme was Spongebob but we’ve had a lot of other fun themes in the past and the students here volunteer and put hours into just taping it up and making it look so cool. And then it’s typically like a Friday or Saturday night and many students from all over campus come out to climb and there’s a lot of other fun activities as well. But it’s just a really cool community event to bring people together in winter when it’s so easy just to hibernate away. Mahogany: My favorite indoor activities are intramural soccer that I play with my friends, bingo, I’d say, and movie nights. For intramurals I play soccer with my friends which is something I really appreciate because some of us don’t really intend to play professionally, but we still have love for the sport which actually puts us all together in the same place which is pretty interesting. Kale: My favorite indoor activities would have to be intramural volleyball. Intramurals that are available on the Duluth campus include basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, dodgeball, spike ball, soccer. I like participating in intramural sports because there’s good competition as well as camaraderie that comes with getting away from some classwork and just easing your mind. Elizabeth: I love the transition between winter and spring because it’s such a time of new life and new growth. My favorite is that one day when all of a sudden you realize that ‘Woah, everything’s green outside, the grass is green, the trees are green.’ It’s just such a magical time as well.
