Yom Kippur 2019: Holiest day of the year for Jews

I’m not a Jewish scholar but I am Jewish so I can tell you a little bit about the holiest day of the year for Jews which starts tonight it’s called Yom Kippur and it means Day of Atonement Yom Kippur is nearly a 26 hour fast that Jews do in order to atone for their sins it comes at the end of ten days of repentance at the start of those 10 days is Rosh Hashanah the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah literally means head of the year’ and it isn’t the start of the Jewish calendar but it’s the birthday of the earth this year during the ten days of repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur I mostly did a lot of self-reflection on the ways that I had impacted the people in my life both positively and negatively I also apologized to my mom for anytime I was a brat Rosh Hashanah is a joyful occasion marked with apples dipped in honey and other sweets ten days later a Yom Kippur it’s a much more serious day again the Day of Atonement Yom Kippur begins with the singing of a prayer called Kol Nidre Kol Nidre is a deeply spiritual and dramatic prayer which marks the opening of the book of life Jews then atone during their fast and hope that they can have their names inscribed in that book to have a good year to come the blowing of the shofar during nila will mark the end of Yom Kippur and the start of the true next Jewish year this is really an opportunity to reflect on how you can be the best version of you and so that’s why do you celebrate Yom Kippur hey if you liked that video be sure to subscribe to our ABC 7 Chicago YouTube channel
